Why Your Black Trim is Turning Grey (and Why You Should Never Torch It)

If you own a modern SUV or truck, you’ve seen it: the once-deep black plastic trim on your fenders and bumpers eventually fades into a chalky, tired grey. This is caused by UV oxidation—the sun is literally "bleaching" the life out of your plastics.
While there are plenty of "quick fixes" on the internet, most of them do more harm than good. At Dykstra Detailing, we believe in restoration, not just a temporary mask.

The Danger of the "Torch Method"
You may have seen videos of people using a propane torch to "bring back the black." It looks like magic, but it’s a disaster for your car for two reasons:
It’s Brittle: The heat draws internal oils to the surface for a temporary shine, but it leaves the plastic underneath dried out and prone to cracking. It’s a short-term trick that causes long-term failure.
It’s Dangerous: One slip of the hand can bubble your clear coat or scorch the paint on the panel next to the trim. The cost to repaint a fender is ten times the cost of a professional trim restoration.
The "Oily Dressing" Trap
Most "Trim Restorers" sold at big-box stores are just silicone oils. They look great for 24 hours, but the first time it rains, the oils run down your paint, leaving greasy streaks. These products act like a magnet for Michigan road dust and never actually "fix" the problem.
The Dykstra Standard: Deep Decontamination
We don't just wipe on a product; we prepare the surface so the restoration lasts.
Step 1: Specialized Degreasing: We use a professional-grade degreaser to scrub away years of embedded road grime and old wax.
Step 2: Isopropyl Alcohol (IPA) Strip: This is the most important step. We wipe the trim down with an alcohol solution to remove every trace of leftover oil or chemical residue. This leaves the plastic "pore-open" and ready to accept the restoration.
Step 3: Solution Finish: We apply Solution Finish, a carbon-based restorer that chemically bonds to the plastic. It replaces the lost black carbon, giving you a deep, factory-matte finish that won't wash off.

Optional Upgrade: Ceramic Protection
While Solution Finish provides incredible longevity on its own, many of our customers choose to add a Ceramic Trim Coating on top. This acts as a permanent "sunblock," sealing in the new color and providing a hydrophobic layer that makes water and mud bead right off.
The Bottom Line
Don't let grey plastic make your $50,000 vehicle look like a $5,000 beater. Avoid the torches and the greasy "miracle" sprays. If you want your trim to stay black for years—not days—give us a call.
