Congratulations! Your vehicle is now shielded by some of the most advanced surface protection available. While a coating is incredibly durable and "self-cleaning," it is not bulletproof. Proper maintenance is the difference between a coating that lasts 1 year and one that lasts 5 years.
Follow this simple guide to keep your car looking like it just left our studio.

1. The "Curing" Period (The First 7 Days)
Your coating is "dry" when you pick it up, but it takes about a week to fully chemically harden (cure).
Do Not Wash: Avoid high-pressure water or contact washing for the first 7 days.
Bird Droppings/Sap: If a bird hits the car, gently spot-clean it with a damp microfiber towel and a dedicated "coating-safe" quick detailer. Do not use soap.
Park Indoors: If possible, keep the car garaged or under cover during this first week.
2. The Golden Rule: Hand Wash Only
NEVER take a coated car through an automatic "brush" car wash. These machines use aggressive plastic bristles and recycled, dirty water that will scratch your coating and kill the gloss.
The Two-Bucket Method: Use one bucket for soapy water and one for rinsing your wash mitt. This ensures you aren't rubbing dirt back onto the paint.
Foam Cannon Method: Rinse the Vehicle with a pressure washer and then use a foam cannon to soap the vehicle. Use a wash mitt with a rinse bucket or a microfiber wash rag switching sides per panel to ensure you aren’t rubbing the last panel's dirt onto the next. Multiple rags work best.
Use pH-Neutral Soap: Use a soap specifically designed for coatings. Avoid "Wash & Wax" soaps, as the waxes in the soap can clog the coating’s hydrophobic properties.

3. Drying is Key
Water spots are the #1 enemy of coatings in Michigan.
Don't Air Dry: Leaving your car to dry in the sun will cause minerals to bake into the coating.
Use a Blower or Plush Microfiber: Use a leaf blower or a dedicated car dryer to "sheet" the water off. If you use a towel, make sure it is a high-quality, clean, plush microfiber drying towel.
4. Use a "Topper" (Optional but Recommended)
Every 3–4 months, apply a Ceramic Boost or Silex spray. This acts as a "sacrificial layer" that takes the brunt of the environmental abuse, keeping the base coating underneath perfectly intact.
5. Annual Decontamination (The Professional Check-up)
Once a year, bring the car back to Dykstra Detailing (or another detailer who offers coating maintenance washes). Over time, even a coated car can collect "bonded contaminants" like iron or tar that soap won't remove. We perform a specialized "Decontamination Wash" to unclog the pores of the coating and restore its original water-beading performance.
